Enclosure Designer — a loudspeaker enclosure modelling tool. Created by Jack Pitt.
Changelog
v0.22Three revisions. Max-SPL chart redesigned (one renderer for Design tab, Compare tab and PDF): bold envelope = achievable max SPL; thin continuous curves for each limit so margins are visible everywhere; a colour strip under the axis shows the active limit per frequency; hover gives exact SPL, the binding limit and dB margins to the others (per-design on Compare). Design versioning: “Save version” snapshots the complete design state (notes included) with a note and number; versions are recallable from the list in Design info and selectable in the Compare tab (“↳ v1.0 · date”) on any metric. Drivers tab: manufacturer filter added (applies to library, filters and compare selectors); comparison widened to five drivers; new calculated rows — EBP with sealed/vented reading, suggested sealed box (Qtc 0.707) and suggested vented box (QB3-family, the Unibox/WinISD approximation), each with the formulas in its tooltip and the manufacturer-recommended box row beneath for cross-checking.21 Jul 2026
v0.21Over-Xmax headroom analysis. The Max-SPL chart gains a dashed Xmech ceiling — the kinematic output limit if the driver is driven to its mechanical stop (exact within the model: SPL at a given displacement is pure kinematics, independent of motor compression). Two new performance tiles: W→Xmax (power at which the driver first hits Xmax with the current EQ) and W→Xmech (estimated power to reach the crash limit, shown with a ≈3 dB large-signal compression allowance for Bl droop and suspension stiffening beyond Xmax; hover for the linear lower bound). The PDF power banner reports the Xmech power as a linear→compressed range, and the performance table quotes the kinematic Xmech headroom in dB. All figures burst-only: beyond Xmax distortion exceeds ~10% and rises toward the stop. The Compare tab gains a Max SPL metric: each selected design's ceiling drawn with the Design-tab limit colours (orange = Xmax, red = power, teal = port) plus its dashed Xmech ceiling, with design names tagged in their slot colours.12 Jul 2026
v0.20Tooltip and PDF refinements. The ? icons now show a proper tooltip instantly on hover and toggle on click/tap (they previously relied on the browser's slow native hints, which never fire on touch); a ? inside a collapsible heading no longer toggles the panel, and the SPL chips share the same tooltips. PDF: design notes moved to the top of page 1, and the Baffle/off-axis and Box-modes chips now gate their PDF content — chip on adds the baffle dimensions + to-scale drawing + H-plane off-axis directivity chart, and the box-mode table + with/without-modes chart with the ripple carried into the main SPL trace; chip off excludes all of it.12 Jul 2026
v0.19Interface clean-up release. All the SPL-affecting switches — Port resonance · Filters/EQ (new master toggle) · Baffle/off-axis · Box modes · Le — now live as toggle chips directly under the SPL chart, so what the curve includes is always visible in one place. Explanatory small-print under panels and charts replaced by hoverable ? icons on the relevant rows. Radiation-space / boundary-distance controls removed: the model is free-space, with the classic 2.83 V half-space sensitivity reference and the LF baffle-step carried by the Baffle toggle (levels unchanged from previous versions). Small-chart headings bolded; green pipe marker dropped from the SPL chart (the resonance itself is plotted). Drivers tab: selector + New/Save/Duplicate/Delete/Export/Import at the top of the library panel, parameter filters in their own panel, and the filters now also narrow the Compare-drivers selectors. PDF: logo no longer clipped, every Design-tab chart included (excursion, port velocity, group delay, step, impedance, amp current, Max SPL) for full reproducibility, and the print view opens from a clean blob URL with zero page margins — no more date/about:blank headers from Chrome.10 Jul 2026
v0.18Driver-database and documentation release. Library grown to 424 drivers with full provenance: the complete current B&C LF range (110 models, 175 impedance variants from bcspeakers.com) and the FaitalPro range refreshed and extended (194 variants: every LF impedance variant plus the LF section of all 15 coaxials, validated field-by-field against FaitalPro's official comparison tables — zero discrepancies, zero changes to existing entries). New first-class driver fields: Xvar (teal guide on the excursion chart, watts-to-Xvar on the PDF), manufacturer's recommended enclosure / tuning, and published displaced volume (now the construction calculator's driver-displacement default; B&C publishes no damage limit, so their Xmech stays blank). PDF export rebuilt as a two-page design record — page 1 a build sheet (construction-volume ledger, bold port cut length vs acoustic length, internal-dimension cross-check, to-scale baffle drawing, power banner incl. Xvar, SPL with tolerance band); page 2 the complete record (full driver data with data source, performance incl. tolerance ranges and minimum impedance, all model settings, notes, revision history, four charts, and a design ref hash + app version for traceability). Port end corrections physically validated by impedance measurement (SWMini, 3 flush lengths + V4 flare + sealed + free-air driver): flush 0.431·d/end measured vs 0.425 modelled; flared mid-band on 0.425 vs overall length; old 0.25 refuted; tuning accuracy ≈ ±2% Fb.8 Jul 2026
v0.17Defensibility release. Filters now carry correct phase: group delay and step response include the EQ chain (magnitudes — and therefore SPL/F3/sensitivity — are unchanged and regression-locked; verified against analytic Butterworth group delay). New driver tolerance bands: worst-case F3/sensitivity envelope across ±Fs/Qes/Vas manufacturing tolerances, drawn on the SPL chart and quoted on the PDF. Measured impedance overlay (Z… button on the impedance card) for validating predictions against DATS/REW measurements. Optional boundary distance turns π / π½ loading into a frequency-dependent image-source model on the SPL plot (metrics keep the flat offset). The Max-SPL chart marks the port-compression onset (17 m/s peak) where the linear model turns optimistic. Driver records gain nominal impedance / data source / date; the library and designs are stamped with schema + app version; automatic rolling backups (last 3 library states) with Restore and Undo last delete live under Library ▸. A computation error now shows a message instead of silently blanking charts. New Help ▸ Model scope & validation. Engine regression suite committed under tests/ and the project is now under git.6 Jul 2026
v0.16Physics-review release. Cone excursion and port velocity are now peak quantities (×√2, matching Xmax and amp-current conventions) and port velocity accounts for the number of ports and the active filters — the Max-SPL port and excursion ceilings, and power-at-Xmax on the PDF, move accordingly. Power compression now genuinely compresses (constant amp voltage into a hot coil, ≈−20·log₁₀(k)). Chuffing limit is flare/roundover-dependent (17–34 m/s peak) and drives the Max-SPL port line. F3/F6/F10 and sensitivity are measured on the diffraction-free curve, so they stay meaningful with the baffle model on. Flared end-correction updated 0.25→0.425·d per JAES port literature (flared ports get shorter computed lengths at the same Fb). Optional Include Le in SPL toggle adds the voice-coil inductance roll-off to the response. Legacy designs are migrated on load (missing fields defaulted, old labels mapped, port resonance kept Off to preserve their curves); inputs are validated against zero/negative entries; negative computed port lengths warn. Sealed designs hide port artefacts. Removed the orphaned baffle-step branch and dead code. Engine re-validated bit-exact against SWMini V3 (F3 55.72 / 98.20 dB with spreadsheet driver data). All chart Y axes now use aligned gridlines in clean 5/10 steps (finer units only on small-range charts), auto-scaled ranges snap to those steps, and the Box-modes chart gains adjustable Y/X extents with Auto.6 Jul 2026
v0.15Tabs reordered — Box modes now sits before Drivers. The Box modes tab gains a Show on design SPL toggle that folds the modal ripple into the design SPL plot. The Enclosure section now shows a construction-volume breakdown: net box volume Vb + auto-computed port volume + driver-displacement and bracing allowances = total gross internal volume for the cabinet maker; the Box modes tab compares the volume from your D×W×H against that target so you can dial in exact internal dimensions.11 Jun 2026
v0.14Port resonance now computed properly: the vent is modelled as a transmission line and its mouth radiation summed with the cone, so the ½-wave resonance and harmonics emerge in the response at the exact c/2L frequency. Toggle in the Port panel; the peak falls with flares/roundover. F3 and sensitivity are unchanged whether it is on or off. New Box modes tab — enter internal depth / width / height (+ driver-to-back-wall and lining) to see the internal standing-wave and back-reflection frequencies and a predicted response with vs without those effects.11 Jun 2026
v0.13Port pipe resonances (½-wave + harmonics at c/2L) are now folded into the frequency response — exact frequencies, with indicative peak heights that fall as you add roundover or fill. The Max SPL chart is reworked: editable axis extents, and a single ceiling line whose colour shows the active limit (orange = Xmax, red = power, teal = port) drawn over the dashed drive-level SPL for headroom. The design-page baffle-step switch was removed. Off-axis curves now use a distinct categorical palette so any two angles are visually separable.11 Jun 2026
v0.12Pre-prototype analysis suite: a Max SPL ceiling chart (lower of excursion-, power- and port-velocity-limited output); selectable radiation space (2π / π / π½ / 4π boundary loading); baffle-step roll-off folded into the on-axis SPL; estimated voice-coil power compression; a port pipe-resonance marker; a group-delay audibility reference line; target / measured response import and overlay; and multi-driver baffle arrays with array-factor directivity in the off-axis plot. The drive-unit parameter filter moved to the Drivers tab and now filters by any parameter with min/max.11 Jun 2026
v0.11SPL graph (design + compare) now tracks the set drive level rather than fixed 2.83 V — peak SPL at drive is reported alongside 2.83 V sensitivity. Port air-velocity chart gains inaudible/audible chuffing guides (≤10 / ≥25 m/s). Port geometry simplified to Circular (diameter) or Rectangular (W×H) with steppers — slot and specify-by removed; a first-order hydraulic-diameter model carries geometry damping. Compare tab gains axis-extent controls plus per-design rated power and drive level. Off-axis curves use a black-to-rainbow perceptual scale and the tab is now "Off-Axis". Driver tab: alphabetical dropdowns, a size/Fs/Xmax filter, Xmax/Xmech labels, and compare selectors aligned as column headers.11 Jun 2026
v0.10Pitt & Giblin logo now fixed permanently in the header and centred at a sensible size on the PDF summary (no longer stretched). New Compare drivers tool on the Drivers tab — pick up to three drivers and compare their key Thiele-Small parameters side by side, including peak air-displacement volume (Vd = Sd × excursion) at both Xmax and Xmech.11 Jun 2026
v0.9Multiple drive units — set the number of drivers and series/parallel wiring per design; the model scales SPL, impedance, per-driver excursion and power handling accordingly (e.g. SUPERWAX = 2× in parallel). Top bar tidied: Load is its own button (opens a sorted design list) and library actions sit under a Library menu (export/import design, backup/restore library). Driver list sorts alphanumerically, parameter fields widened, nominal size shown in inches. Baffle fields start empty instead of showing placeholder dimensions.11 Jun 2026
v0.8Built-in seed updated to accurate datasheet values (FaitalPro 15PR400 / 12PR320 / 10PR320 8Ω + Dayton RSS210HO-4 8\u2033) and no default designs — a fresh load opens on a blank working design until you Restore your library.10 Jun 2026
\n
v0.7Importable driver library: the full FaitalPro LF range in 8Ω and 4Ω (148 drivers) pulled from FaitalPro datasheets with Xdamage as Xmech, plus Dayton, B&C and SB Acoustics from the UniBox database, and 12 named project designs. Blank Xmech handled gracefully where a manufacturer does not publish a mechanical limit.10 Jun 2026
v0.6Cloud sync to a synced (iCloud) folder via File System Access, installable PWA, and a last-saved-to-cloud confirmation; all linear dimensions switched to mm; \u25b2\u25bc 5% nudge steppers on key fields; to-scale baffle layout drawing; renamed to Enclosure Designer; baffle \u201cEnable on SPL\u201d fix; Help \u2192 About changelog.10 Jun 2026
v0.5Designer / date / version fields, in-design revision log, default logo on the PDF, F3/F6/F10 marked on the curve, more excursion headroom, independent-scroll layout with a full-width SPL plot over three rows of two, Help & About.10 Jun 2026
v0.4Power-limited drive model (active EQ ahead of a power-capped amp), major/minor log gridlines, editable extents on the off-axis plot, PDF build summary with power-at-Xmax.9 Jun 2026
